viva-la-sunnah:

Question 1: What is the starting point for the slave (of Allaah); the reason in his happiness in both of the Worlds (dunya and akhirah); and the secret in his success?

The heart’s attachment to the Book of Allaah (the Qur’aan) is the starting point for everyone, so the slave of Allaah should be certain that his happiness, success and strength is in reading it and pondering over its meanings.

  • the Noble Qur’aan is the strongest tool for keeping Tawheed and Imaan, and it is surely the cure for all illnesses. So, whosoever heart is attached to the Qur’aan will find, by the will of Allaah, the meanings of the Qur’aan pouring over him. That can happen to someone for such a long time that he can’t even finish one ayah because of how much he is understanding from its meanings, and this happened to the Salaf before us.

Sahl ibn ‘Abdullah at-Tastari (rahimahuAllaah) said:

“If the slave (of Allaah) was given by each letter from the Qur’aan a thousand meaning, he wouldn’t be able to finish knowing what Allaah has bestowed in an Ayah in this Book, because the Book of Allaah is his description and just as how Allaah has no ending (subhanahu wa ta’alaa), there is no ending for the understanding His words.

Indeed, the amount of understanding everyone understands is because of how much Allaah opened his heart (to the understanding of the Qur’aan). the Speech of Allaah is not created, and no one can fully understand it.”

Question 2: Why did we say “getting the heart attached to the Qur’aan?

Because the heart is the “machine” for understanding and realizating; and it is the part of the body which gets affected by the Qur’aan the most. The heart is in Allaah’s hands too; He opens it whenever He wills, and He closes it whenever He wants with His wisdom and knowedge, and He said:

“O you who have believed, respond to Allah and to the Messenger when he calls you to that which gives you life. And know that Allah intervenes between a man and his heart and that to Him you will be gathered.” (al-Qur’aan, Surat Al-Anfaal 8:24)

so when you’re trying to understand the Qur’aan, remember that the hearts are in Allaah’s hands and that he is Al-Fataah (The Opener), so the wisdom is not “how” (to understand the Qur’aan), but it is all the blessings of Allaah alone, and whatever understanding you get is a blessing from Allaah which you should thank Allaah for and not be arrogant about. So, whenever Allaah gives you an understanding in the Qur’aan (by opening to you it’s meanings), then praise Him and ask Him to bless you with more and always remind yourself that this blessing is from Him alone - nothing from your effort at all.
